Irena Olana Rozyckia Kmetyk is an expert in the traditional designs of all of the different areas of the Ukraine and can tell by the design and colors which area any embroidery design is from.
She was born in the Carpathian mountains of the Ukraine in 1917. She survived World War II, during which she exchanged embroidered blouses for food while in "P-camps" or displaced person camps. In 1949 she came to America and settled in New York City where in 1971 she went to work for Surma, a Ukrainian store. In 1979 she came to Albuquerque upon retirement. Irene immediately began to teach Ukrainian embroidery at the Highland Senior Center, where she taught a large class for 16 years. She also gave several programs and workshops for the Embroiderer's Guild of America and other groups.
In 1982 Surma published a folio of 23 pages of charted Ukrainian Rose designs by Irene. During the past few years, Irene has self-published four books of Ukrainian designs charted in color with the aid of her computer, which are being made available on-line here.
