I studied martial arts at Winklers Karate Acadamy in Granite Falls, NC. for 1 1/2 years,
and I am currently in the green belt rank. Due to other obligations I have had to
temporarily discontinue training, but plan to go back as soon as I am able to.
The academy teaches American style traditional karate, most of which is taken from the
Shito Ryu system. The acadamy was established in 1976. The head instructor at the academy,
Robert Winkler, has been involved in martial arts for 30 years with assistant instructors
Mark White, Tim Greene & J.C. Hicks, Kata, Self defence, Weapons Katas, and Sparring
are all incorporated in their classes.
They offer classes for youth, from ages 6-15, as well as adults. The instructors are more
interested in teaching the art of traditional martial arts, rather than trying to make
fighters out of its students, with knowledge of the martial arts being a very important
part of the classes. New Youth and Adult classes begin the first week of September and the
first week of February, at the reasonable rate of $30.00 per month. If you live in N.C.
